 Yamaha rattle

Hi,

The pinky levers on my old yamaha rattle because they locatewith a kind of small pin into the mechanism. The problem is that there is no room to put any cork.
On my Buffets it is different and you have space to place corks do dull the rattles.
Any ideas on how to quieten down my Yamaha 23N?

cheers

Cover the pins with either pad skin (which isn't 'fish skin' at all) or cut the corners off those small self sealing plastic bags, add a drop of thick oil to the pin, slip the bits of plastic over the pins and replace them.

Another thing that can be done is if there's enough metal in the connecting levers is to ream them out wide enough to take the extra thickness of thin Teflon or heat shrink tubing.

Or if you really want to, open up the holes to 2.4mm then drill out the ends of the LH levers to 1.8mm and fit Buffet nylon pins, but reinforce the pins with steel so they won't break. Then you'll just have to add a drop of thick oil to the pins every now and then.

Most clarinets use a small piece of "fish skin" (the same material pads are made of) to reduce excess noise. I believe you can buy sheets of the stuff but I've had good success with cutting up old pads that aren't to worn.

I've seen PTFE tape being used in this application - that's a relatively decent emergency fix and it will compress enough should you add what seems to be too much.
