In the Westside Story “One Hand One Heart” YouTube video take 7 who is the clarinetist? Both he and Julius Baker on flute sound great. Bernstein is conducting. I know this guy but can’t come up with the name. Help me out.

Thanks. I should have known. That was quite the recording session. Leonard Bernstein looked very appreciative of the sensitive woodwind playing. Jose Carreras (excuse spelling) was magical.

At the risk of being positive, the “take” was beautiful. Both vocalists and orchestra . I hear glitches but the end result was “marvellous” as Leonard Bernstein commented.

Was this a different clip from the recording session that appeared first on TV in the mid-1980s?
The problem with Carreras in that session wasn't as much that he was underprepared as that he was totally incapable of shedding his Spanish accent to make Tony's part credible. I suppose to Americans' ears it's easier for a native English speaker (Kiri Te Kanawa is a New Zealander) to simulate enough of a Latin-Spanish accent to satisfy an American audience. Neither of the original Marias, Carol Lawrence (Broadway), nor Natalie Wood (film) was Latin American or Spanish (nor did they affect much more than a very light suggestion of an accent). But the whole point of the story as it was finally presented was the conflict between first-generation or second-generation native New Yorkers and the newly immigrated Puerto Ricans. Trying to produce a convincing Polish-American character with a clearly Spanish accent was, I suppose, more of a stretch. At least it apparently was for Bernstein, who was at times clearly exasperated by it.

It’s Leonard Bernstein, Westside Story: Studio clip 7 on YouTube. There is no sense of frustration in this clip. For me the language issue is not a problem. It’s just the music making that I connect with.
