 Repair question
Author: mmatisoff

I was practicing tonight, working on chromatic scales when I started hearing clanking keys. It didn't take long to realize that the B natural ring key was hitting the RH 3rd and 4th keys as well as the chalameau C# and Clarion G# key. Is there a "quick" repair fix I can do until I can get to it to the repair shop? None of the keys look bent. Maybe I just never noticed them hitting before. It is affecting the notes, though.

Thanks, Marty

Which key do you mean by the B natural ring key - which finger controls it?

Can you still get long Bb (upper register) with the fingering xoo|xoo?

Is it only making mechanical noise as you use the side keys and C#/G# keys?

How old is it? As these clarinets were made over a fairly long period (1984-2001) the keywork is going to be different depending on its age. The earlier models have more Selmer like keywork and the later ones having more Buffet like keywork.

Sounds like there's more travel in some of the keys than there ideally should be - either the key corks have compressed or have broken off or the keys are bent but that may not be obvious if you're not sure what you're looking for.

The biggest culprit of key-on-key noise is most likely caused by the RH2 ring key linkage which is getting hit by the C#/G# key on the underside of the linkage if it opens too much and by the side and trill keys on its upper side if they're bent down too much. A combination of several factors that can only be addressed by a clarinet specialist repairer or a reputable woodwind repairer with an eye for detail.
