 Barrel Recommendations

Howdy all-

My A clarinet always plays just a little flat to very flat. If I have time to properly warm it up, it is totally acceptable for rehearsal (until the principal flute inevitably goes very sharp) but I'd like to have more flexibility with intonation. I'm thinking of getting a slightly shorter barrel and also upgrade to something better (I'm currently playing on the stock barrel, I'm pretty sure it's 65mm).

Any suggestions?

You could try almost anything in 64mm and that would help a lot. :)

I had the same issue back when I had an R-13 A, and used a 64mm Buffet standard barrel to make things easier on me when I had to pick it up cold and play. There are excellent barrels from tons of makers though.

I play on a 64mm Moenigg barrel with my R13 setup. It's amazing, in my humble opinion. :)

Be sure to chart how flat you are throughout the entire scale. Also, how old is the instrument? Depending on the degree of flatness at various points, you might need some taper (As ClarinettyBetty is indicating by use of a taper barrel)

Allan-

My clarinet is just a few years old. I haven't charted the intonation tendencies yet but I will definitely make some time for that. My general experience is that the full range hangs flatter than it should, so sharp pitches are less sharp and flat ones are very flat but I'll get my tuner out for sure.
