West Side Story Symphonic Dances - Gliss in mvt 4
Author: sax panther
Date:   2015-10-12 14:23

Hi all

I ran a search for this piece, but could only find threads relating to the flutter tonguing (which I'm fine with).

My wind band is playing the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. In the last movement, "Cool", in the last few bars there is a gliss from altissimo D up to A flat.

I'm ok with sub-altissimo gliss (Rhapsody in blue etc) but this is the first time I've come across one in this range. Does anyone have any experience with playing this piece, and if so, any tips, or fingerings which worked well for you?

thanks

Mike

Try this fingering for altissimo G#/Ab:

Sp. Th. Throat G# ooo|xoo Ab/Eb

You should be able to lip slur from the D up to that.

Hey, this is pretty useful for me as well as I'm playing it again Sunday. Thanks! First time playing the Orchestral Version on Bass Clarinet.. I've played the Symphonic Winds version a few times and it's much harder.

Chris P's suggestion works an absolute treat - on my clarinet seems to be a tiny bit cleaner if I miss out the throat G sharp. Thanks for your help Chris.

Curious - for those playing this in a Wind Ensemble -

Are you playing the arrangement with 5 movements, or the new full-bore 9 movement transcription?

Hi Ken

The one I'm doing only has 4 movements...can't remember the name of the 1st one, but 2nd is the "Mambo", 3rd is "Cha Cha" and 4th is "Cool". That's for a normal symphonic wind band.

There is a new transcription available- all 9 movements, good, but difficult, and wonderful!

I've played the Symphonic Dances suite with a concert band before (on tenor sax), but like the sound of this new one.

Do you know who it's arranged and published by?
