John Finucane shines in the Francaix

Youtube has just put up a dashing performance of the Francaix Clarinet Concerto by Irish clarinetist John Finucane with the RTE National Symphony. A great job of taming this beast.

I agree. An exceptional performance. He seems born to play in the key of B.

Never understood the obsession with that piece... Fine player nonetheless

This performance is noteworthy because Finucane ties the parts together rather than wandering from one station on the technical obstacle course to another. He sustains the line of the work possibly to make it sound like a better composition than it is. He never seems absent-minded and brings out all the lyrical singing parts as well as maxing out the finger-breaking agility drills. He refuses to allow the many traps to ensnare him and floats above them with a flute-like tranquility. His high notes are not shrill, his loud notes are not strident. He never strains or overblows, yet lives up to all the dramatic and whimsical demands of the music
