 Brazilian choro workshop
Author: John Morton
Date:   2014-12-04 21:19

The 2015 Centrum Choro Workshop has been announced for next Apr. 22-26. Choro has its origins in the late 19th century, predating samba, bossa nova and other styles for which Brazil is better known.

Choro is played on acoustic instruments in small ensembles, most commonly including flute, clarinet, mandolin, 7-string guitar and pandeiro (a sophisticated tambourine). The music has undergone some revivals and developments over the years, but generally retains the dance forms found in ragtime, musette, marches and other older styles.

The clarinet instructor for the last 2 yrs. (and again next year) has been Anat Cohen. She loves the music, and the presence of such a formidable player indicates the artistry and challenge of the repertoire.
