I just used the Spectrum Analyser to test two reeds on a stock r13 with Vandy B40 mpc one Legere signature 2-1/2 and one V12 2-1/2.

I think the Legere has a more pure tone and the cane a more rich sound.
Each has its place. I bought the Legere because my cane reeds were not working well in the high humidity of my new home.
I have read tons of threads on the subject but have not found any real analysis of the two reed types with a spectrum analyzer So I thought I would to it while it was thundering away here.
Also, I wanted to introduce myself. My name is David and I was a music major in college way back when, but aside from some jazz arranging have not done much since. Recently getting back into clarinet.

Thank you for the spectrum analysis. I have gotten to the point where I have given up on the Legere based on the lack of enough overtones to even differentiate which clarinet I am playing. After three SOLID months of Legeres I had convinced myself that I could produce an acceptable sound. The problem was in context of an ensemble were you need to hold your own with other timbres AND match the other clarinets around you. It was an untenable situation. Going back to real reeds (in this case Vandoren Rue Lepic) was like opening the door to a whole new world of 'sound color.'
Another Board member posted videos of two Berlin Philharmonic members who can make these reeds work. I feel strongly that there is an ideal dimension and cut for the given material (you can see this phenomenon comparing the much thinner Signatures to the other Legere cuts). Perhaps all the factors line up better also with the acoustical character of the Oehler system clarinet. As of yet these factors DO NOT line up for Boehm clarinets. Of course I speak for competitive, orchestral level playing.
Still, the promised land can not be that far away. If Legere cannot achieve this, perhaps another synthetic reed will come along that makes the grade.

Paul, as you know I've posted here probably too much about my own exhaustive efforts and trouble with Legeres. And my main trouble was playability especially at the top of my range. BUT I did not even mention that when I went back to cane (any cane!) it was also like night and day for sound color. I would also describe it as Legere being "deader" (darker?). And they got deader over time, perhaps.
I and so many others really really really REALLY want to put cane aside. And have not yet been able to do so. And have wasted a lot of time energy and $ in the attempt(s).
And yet some report here--- no problem man, I'm synthetic all the way and I don't understand why everyone doesn't do the same. Very frustrating.

David, since you've been using this app and I've just begun to play with it, maybe you already know - is there a way to save a picture of the graph at any chosen point? Or to get a readout of the numbers shown on the graph at some point in time?

You can you can take a screen shot by holding the home and on/off buttons together for a second or so. Then there will be a screen image on your camera roll. Then you can just go to your camera and email it or whatever. This is for any app.

p.s. It is kind of tricky to try to do while actually playing though. You might need some help from someone. That is why I decided to film it instead.
