 Ron Monsen

I was on ebay and just found out Ron Monsen (sp?) died. He was very nice to me in the mid-1990s, and sent me some Selmer C-80-(whatever) mouthpieces to try. I remember his posts from the mailing list. Nice guy. Interesting perspective.

He once said something about how funny it was that two clarinet firms, more or less across the street from one another, were producing two totally different top-of-the-line clarinets: the Buffet Elite and the Selmer Recital. One a thin-walled and the other thick-walled clarinet.

I think I have his business card here.

I noticed that some of Dr. Monsens clarinets are being offered on Ebay. There are some clarinets from the 1920's through the 1950's and they are all in need of help. It is hard to understand how such a talented musician can just let excellent instruments simply deteriorate.

He may have acquired them for future overhauls, as I do. I have four clarinets in "as received" condition awaiting work. Found it interesting he had two Centered Tones.

Currently my main instrument is a Centered Tone with a Q prefix from 1955 and it is a superb instrument in every way which makes it understandable to me that Dr. Monsen had two.

I had two CTs (both P series) but I sold one because I thought "OMG, I have two CTs."
