Uebel Superior question - tuning issue
Author: Musikat

I am trying out a new (to me, but barely used) Uebel Superior from someone on this board. It came with four barrels, 64-67, but I am finding it plays well in tune pushed all the way in on the 64, which seems pretty short to me and doesn't give me much leeway in a colder room or with a group that is tending sharp. Granted I haven't gotten much play time on it because it also needs to be broken in, but even after 15-20 minutes when it seems pretty warmed up, that seems to be the case. I have a Behn adjustable barrel, but it is currently being fixed (a friend borrowed it and it got stuck), so I can't try it to see how 63 would work for it.

Does anyone else who plays on these have any advice on these instruments? Is this common? Could it be an adjustment issue (either for the player or the instrument, which has been sitting for a few years, I believe)?

I tried it with my Greg Smith 1+ and Aria 3.5 reeds, which is my preferred setup on my R13. I also tried it with the ESM JP6 MR it came with, and it did seem to like that a bit better tuning wise and seemed like a nice mouthpiece, but I love my Smith and want to be able to use both if possible, as needed.

I am planning on taking it to my trusted tech tomorrow as well, so if there is any adjustment he should look for that might help this, let me know.

Thanks

It might be worth experimenting with different mouthpieces. I have a pair of these, and find they tune very well with a 65 or 66mm barrel on the Bb and generally 65mm on the A. I normally use a standard Vandoren B40 Lyre Profile 88 with them.

Try the 63 and tuning will be easier if you have to go up.
