 Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody #2 cadenza
Author: musica
Date:   2012-07-28 17:42

A little confused over cadenza. I have the excerpt from the green International
Book and downloaded part from IMSLP. The solo is for clarinet in D on a
Separate part and nothing on the Bb part. and only the one cadenza is on
The D part not the remaining two cadenzas listed in the excerpts.... Are the
Other two played by violin solo? Thanks.

Forget what you have.

If you can, obtain a copy of the Langenus book.....Clarinet Cadenzas: How to Phrase them (printed 91 yrs ago)

It was published in 1921 and is one of those oversized books like the le duck type.

Page 5 has the 3 cadenzas..........as written and how to 'play' them.

All three are for Bb.

I do not recall the publisher but when I played the pc, it was for Bb

There's two transcriptions of the work. The Muller-Berghaus one has all the cadenzas for the Bb instrument, but IMSLP has only the score. The Liszt/Doppler one has the cadenzas for the D or Eb instrument; IMSLP has the parts. Is the Muller-Berghaus transcription the "usual" or "standard" one?

I have an old book 2 but it's blue, my book 1 is green. It's the McGinnes books pub. by International Vol. 1-4, the Drucker did 5-8. Everything in that book for this rhapsody is in Bb. I could be wrong but I've never come across anything by Liszt for D or Eb clarinet. With that said, he wrote a lot of pieces that never get played much so I can only say what I've seen as professional player. There might be transcrpitions of his works though.

Ed, check out the score for Mazzepa. Clarinet 1 is in D.

In the Rhapsody, there is a 16th note passage that is virtually unplayable on the B-flat (unless you like the tone/intonation of the open high D) but is not that bad on E-flat.
