 Care of older instrument

Just wondering if maybe it's better to just not play an older wooden instrument through the winter if you don't have to. Just wondering what people think about this subject.

Are you worried about cracking?

If it's one that's been neglected for a number of years until very recently, then you might be taking some risks there.

But if it's an older instrument that's been played constantly and maintained well throughout its life, then that shouldn't be a problem.

I'd be far more worried about newer clarinets (with their lower-quality and less well-aged wood) cracking, than older instruments. A bit of good-quality (e.g. Doctor's Products) bore oil once a year and you should be fine.

I was going to say the same thing that David said. The wood in older instruments is usually stable, tight, and seasoned. They rarely crack unless the wood goes through extreme temperature or climate changes in a short time... and even then, it takes a lot to make an older wooden instrument crack. I have two vintage wooden clarinets (R13 and a Signet), and despite being dropped, rained on, snowed on, etc., neither has ever cracked.
But, if the instrument has a history of cracking (even if it is older), I do suggest being careful. One of my clarinet instructors has a Leblanc L7 (late 60's), and a crack opened up again on her a few years ago for no reason. It all depends on the individual instrument.
If you worry about it still, I suggest keeping a humidifier in the clarinet case... this is the one I use for my 1.5-year-old Tosca, and despite going through the Snowpocalypse in last February, it has never cracked. :)-- http://www.humistat.com

Did you mean to post a link or tell us which humidifier you use?
