My experience (others may disagree) is this...
The 5RV Lyre mouthpiece blank will produce a brighter sound- not necesarrily a bad thing, especially in the lower register. By this i don't mean "thin", but with more of a clear "ring" in the tone. The facing on the 5RV Lyre will suit thin blank style reeds more than thick (ie V12), and will feel more resistant compared to the Backun (more feeling of "back pressure" and more effort to articulate), but you would probably not notice this unless you were switching between the mouthpieces- you'd just adjust to this...
The Backun is likely to have a darker sound, especially in the upper register, but lack a little shape in the lower register- you would learn to compensate for this with your tone production and reed selection. I have always found the tuning to be very good, and for the Backun mouthpieces to have a more free blowing characteristic, especially when articulating. This is not always an advantage... in general i have found these mouthpieces to be very "easy" to play on, but also a bit "characterless" unless you have just the right reed...

I'm sure someone will disagree with me, but that has been my experience.

you have to try them to appreciate them.

I used an m13/m15/m30 before switching to my backun tradition mouthpiece. I like it very much, but i'm not convinced the sound is really that different. Maybe more focused.

I still use the 5rv on Eb clarinet and B44 on bass clarinet. You just have to try them to see for yourself. If you're 5rv Lyre works, don't change.

I don`t want to change my 5rv lyre, it`s very good for playing classical music, but more than year i also play ethnic, folk music and klezmer, and i think that possibly i need one more mtp. to change my sound in different styles
