 Adagio e Tarantella Band Arrangement
Author: Student
Date:   2011-07-03 20:14

Hi guys!
My school has a "Senior Concerto Compeitition" every year, and I am going to audition for it. The piece my private instructor and I have selecte dis Adagio e Tarantella. However, I'm having trouble finding the parts I need. I found a band arrangement of the piece (arr. Reed and published by BAS Publishing Co.) for sale on jwpepper.com, but I can't figure out where to find the corresponding solo part! Does it come with the band parts and the score, or seperately...?
I'd love if someone could help me with this; it's the first time I've ever dealt with band accompainment.
Thanks so much for your help!

I'll bet that the solo part does come with the arrangement. I've heard band arrangements, and they typically have the complete work, not the shortened edition (shortened version starts on a Clarion D, full starts on a clarinet low G).

David, I hate to admit that I've never seen any arrangement other than the one for clarinet and piano edited by George Waln and published by Kjos, which sounds from your description like the shortened version (I'm assuming we're talking about the one by Cavallini). Who publishes the longer one? How much is left out of the Kjos edition?

The high school band I directed performed this in about 1966 (I conducted and a soloist with the Langley Field Air Force Band played the solo). Sorry, but I can't recall any of the particulars, bus it WAS a published arrangement.

I own a complete set of the Waln / Kjos band arrangement with clarinet solo for Adagio and Tarantella and have used it many times.

The clarinet part does come with the band arrangement, but it is the shortened version as David noted, which starts on the 3 clarion D's before the Adagio Cantabile section. Thus, the entire opening 17 measures of the piano/clarinet solo are omitted.

Also, one of the cadenza runs before the tarantella section is also left out, although it can easily be inserted back in from the original version.

The band version is the 1945 George Waln concert band arrangement, published by Kjos. Concert band library number is B-102.

I played this with my high school this year. This is the arrangement we did. It does include the opening arpeggios and the cadenza. It comes with the solo part.

There is also a center section (low G, f# grace note section which is about 15 measures).

I have a green cover clarinet solos book that has the whole version, and several recordings have the full version.

Would look it up, but will take a bit of time - gigantic library.

Best recording I've heard of the Cavallini is Hans Rudolph Stadler's. I think it's long out of print.

Wow, thank you all for your numerous and timely comments! I'm so glad to see there's plenty of band arrangements of this piece out there.
Just one more question: Do you know how to/ if it is possible to order the solo part seperately, if it does come with the full score? Thanks for all your help!

Luyben music shows 4 different versions (probably the full version with piano) for sale ranging from $5 to $9.95 plus shipping. Gary Van Cott and Sheetmusic Plus probably also have it.

Best regards,
jnk

"Well ya play that TARANTELLA and the hounds all start to roar,
The boys all go to hell and then the Cubans hit the floor.
They drive along the pipe line, they tango til they're sore,
THey take apart their nightmares and they leave them by the door.

Let me fall out of a window with confetti in my hair,
Deal out jacks or better on a blanket by the stairs,
Ill tell you all my secrets but I lie about my past,
So send me off to bed for evermore."
-Tom Waits

Sorry, whenever I hear that word tarantella I cant help but think of that song.

Gary Van Cott carries two editions besides the Waln/Kjos one. He carries an edition edited by Giampieri and published by Ricordi, and one edited by David Hite and published by Southern. Both have piano reductions, but I imagine one of the three will match (or could be lightly edited to match) any band-arranged accompaniment you'd find.

Thank you all for your help! I ended up ordering the Southern Music Company version and will edit it to fit the band arrangement as needed.
Thanks again!
