Price range for 10 yr old Buffet R13?
Author: 2speeds

Looking at buying a Buffet R13 serial number 465553 manufactured in 2000. Asking $2000 which seems high. Our clarinet instructor is looking at it for tone, condition, cracks, repairs, etc. If he finds it in good order, is there a range I should offer for it? Thanks!

You should be able to find a good used R-13, 5 yrs old or so, in the neighborhood of $1500. I have two or three customers graduating HS that are wanting to sell their well maintained R-13s. I'm sure you'll find the same thing in your area.

$1500 seems really, really low for a good clarinet that's not 15 or more years old.

Depends on where you are shopping. As GLHopkins mentioned, you will often see newer R13's being sold by graduating high school students who aren't planning on studying music in college. Every July there are usually a couple listed in my area on CL for around $1000.

I agree with David. I would think that a ten year old Buffet in excellent condition should be a good buy at 1/3 off the new selling price. No tax, no shipping. How much is a new one today? If it's over 3K I'd say it's worth 2K if it's a really good clarinet.
Steve, I think an excellent Buffet R13 ten years old or younger selling for 1K is a steal. I would say, buyer beware. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Ed, this morning, I bought a R-13 with nickel plate with a serial number 560,XXX and paid $650 for it. The kid is graduating HS and wasn't going to continue playing. With the exception of plating worn thru to the copper on the upper ring key and needing 4 pads, the instrument is in excellent plus condition. So, there are deals to be had.

I think new, when I looked last fall at buying a new R-13 (nickel keys, not silver) was in the neighborhood of $2,600.

In Europe this is overprized by appr. 50-100%. 10 years old and to overhaul mostly, a price below 1.000,-EUR should more fitting.

I'd think that most European take home incomes are quite a bit leas than in the US due to much higher taxes.

Can't spend what you don't have.

No no, was not a proposal to buy in Europe ;-) It was only a hint regarding the price level. Custom tax could be tha half the price additional!

Probably impossible to generalize. In truely social countries for example you might get many things in return for your taxes that otherwise you would have to pay for so you can have more left for a clarinet.

I have to agree with clarnibass on the point he made above.

GL said "With the exception of plating worn thru to the copper on the upper ring key and needing 4 pads, the instrument is in excellent plus condition". I would hardly call that in excellent condition, but the price is very good if it plays well in tune and the wood is in good condition. My idea of an instrument in "excellent" condition is one that does not need any work done to it or at the very least, very, very little.

If in fact a new Buffet R13 can be purchased for only $2600 as C--04 stated, I haven't priced one recently, then I agree that 2K would be too much for a ten year old one. ESP

PS. Boy are we clarinet players lucky, can you imagine buying any other top of the line instrument for $2600, you can't even buy a really good string bow for that price. I know there are more expensive clarinets but the R13 is at least one of the top on the line. Just compare that to the top line oboes, flutes and bassoons.

Duh, that's why I said "with the exception of"....lol

Anyway, the keys, posts and rings are off and cleaned and on their way to the platers to be stripped and silver plated. I think I'm going to keep this one.

Yes GL, you did say with the exception of........ That's like saying I bought a used car in excellent condition but it needed new tires, new battery, 90,000 mile check up, including a new timing belt, and a paint job. When there are several major exceptions it is no longer in "excellent condition". But I think the price you paid for it seems fair since you need to put so much into it for it to become in "excellent condition". I would have referred to that clarinet as in fair condition but plays well. Maybe that's just me. ESP

I just sold my 13-year-old R13 (nickel keys) for $1300 after spending $150 or so at the repair shop to make sure everything was in perfect shape. I figured that was a pretty fair price. I miss that horn...
