 ligs and barrels

Hi all!

I primarily play bass clarinet, but I've switched to soprano clarinet for the high school band. I'm pretty ignorant of what difference a different barrel can make and I don't know much about ligatures for either instrument. Right now I have a Rovner lig on the bass and a cheap metal contraption on my soprano (plastic Buffet -yeah) I guess I'm curious what everyone else uses and why a barrel makes a difference. I'm hoping to get either a Leblanc Concerto or a Buffet R-13 for Christmas. Thanks!

I would recommend that you play on the barrel that comes with your new clarinet until you get used to its playing characteristics. As for the lig, I would recommend the new VanDoren Optimum for its versatillity of tone colors and response. Good luck with the new clarinet, whichever one Santa decides to deliver.

Check out the Rovner "Eddie Daniels" version. It's pricey, but offers lots of tuning choice. It will also offer some consistency with your Bass.

If there's nothing wrong with the tuning on your Soprano, waiting on a barrel is an excellent idea, otherwise you'll end up with a room full of mismatched barrels, mpcs and bears - OH MY!

Your teacher prolly has lots of mouthpieces laying around. With a little soap and a mpc patch, you could find something general purpose.

Otherwise, you need a vendor who will allow you to test at least three different items at any given time.

I like the Gigliotti P34, the Fobes 2M* or the Vandoren M13 (the Vandies are very inconsistent, so choosing a good one is tough).

Also, I've had really good results from Dave Spiegelthal, another Bass clarinet player, and his hand finished mpcs.

This is a really important choice, hope you find a good one!
