How many mouthpieces do u have?
Author: Joey
Date:   2000-11-12 13:55

Hi, just wanted to know what kind of mouthpieces do most of the ppl on this bulletin board use. And which mouthpiece is their favourite one. Start listing !
I use a B45....feels too free blowing....looks like its time to upgrade!

Not necessarily upgrade but perhaps a different style. For example, try out the 5RV.

i use 5 mp. My #1 is a Gregory Smith Kasper. I also like all three of my M. Lurie--M2, M3 and a crystal. I also like my Bay nuance. I also have a couple of stock mp that I never use.
The main reason that I listed the smith #1 is that it is really feel blowing. I can hit high c as the first note. have a hard time doing this with the other mp.

Up until recently, I used a Hite model J mouthpiece, and I was satisfied with it until I switched to a Vandoren M14, which is now my preferred mouthpiece. I use Rico Royal 2 1/2 strength reeds with both mouthpieces. Strength 3 reed is still harder for me to play, and so I will be staying wit the 2 1/2's.
Since I haven't read on the BB that anyone else is using the M14, I'm sure there are users out there. I'd like to know their opinions about this mouthpiece and what reeds they use with it. I believe a harder reed is recommended, but for me, the 2 1/2 works fine (to my ear).

Vandoren 5RV with 3 - 3.5 reeds when intonation and control matters most; Brilhart 2* with 2.5 - 3 reeds when I want something easier on the lip that's free-blowing; and Vandoren 5JB with 2.5 reeds when I'm experimenting around or making believe that I can play jazz.

I really like my Selmer HS* mouthpiece, but I also like my Vandoren B45 profile 88. Nice mellow sound, and there isn't a ton of resistence.

I use a Richard Hawkins with Vandoren V12 4-1/2's, and that's my main setup. I also have used a Morgan RM10, Vandoren B45, and Selmer C85....all of which I liked, but my Richard Hawkins is my favorite.

I started with a Selmer HS*, then I had a Frank Kaspar, Cicero, refaced by Matson. I replaced it with a Gennusa.

I use a Vandoren B45. (notice the dot) for my soprano clarinet with Mitchell Lurie 2.5 reeds. On my bass I use a Hite mouthpiece with either Glotin 1.5 reeds or the new Rico Grand Concert 3 reeds. I'm starting to prefer the Glotins, though.

I do most of my playing with an old 2RV, Harrison lig, 2.5 VD setup. On my old horn and my chops this works quite well with good tone. I also have a duck billed MPc I got with an old clunker that is really good but I can;t read the name as the top of the MPc is very scratched, but it looks to be maybe an Italian name. If I ever get someone to identify this one, I will look for another in better condition. You will have to experiment alot. What works for me may well be disasterous for you. Its one of those "search for the Holy Graile" things.

I probably have 4, but all of my playing is done on a Vandoren 5JB. It's a jazz mouthpiece. Usually Vandoren #2 reeds or 2 1/2 on the V-12's. I like the big sound I get with it.

I would love to have the chance to try and Bay or Mitchell Lurie mouthpieces, but they don't pop up much around here. I used to use a B45 for years, but for the past couple of years I've been using both my Pomarico ebony wood mouthpiece and occasionally if Im playing in a band I'll use my other Pomarico crystal mouthpice for a brighter tone. I find when i use the crystal though, I need a much softer reed. I use mitchel Lurie 5's or V12 4's.

Hi,

I play blaymans, blaymans and blaymans. I have one for every clarinet I own. ( 3 Bb soprano clarinets and one bass)

Mr. blayman makes some of the best mouthpieces available in my opinion.

But he is retiring!!! SO he wont be making any more!!!

Over the years, my mainmps hve been: Selmer HS**, Kaspar (Cicero) #14, Bay (Ithica) w/K-14 facing, and currently, Leblanc "Educator" customized by my old college clarinet teacher. ( Want to try one of his newer custom mps using the "Zinner" blank.) In my drawer, Pyne, M-13, Ridenour, Bay (newer product), and a K-10. Lots of sax mps--metal and rubber. Currently using: Sop--Anello, Alto--Gregory (Hollywood), Tenor--Guardala (studio), Bari--Rousseau Jazz.

In response to Joey's situation with the B45 at the top of the list, I would advise you to try the other Vandoren models that are currently out there before straying off into the realm of mouthpiece madness. It's possible to find excellent Vandorens if you have patience to try a hand full of 5RV Lyres, M13's, M14's and the new M15's. I'm sure that you could find a less blown out and loose feeling Vandoren than your current B45 and for the most part, they're all pretty reed friendly and have rather consistent facings. Good luck!

I've gone through a whole truckload of mouthpieces in the past five years, including Vandoren's 2RV, 5RV, B45, M13, M14; a nuumber of Selmers, Mitchell Lurie's offerings, a couple Pyne, Gennusa, etc...and I've found one that I really like: a Marcellus M08.

And like all others, it's more a personal preference for sound rather than any well-reasoned scientific assessment...
