 Schumann Pieces for Clarinet
Author: wjk

I have sheet music for Schumann Op. 132 (Marchenerzahlungen) for clarinet "in B"---does that mean Bb clarinet?
Is there music available for clarinet for Canonical Etudes (Op.56); Marchenbilder (Op. 113), and Five Pieces in Folk Style (Op.102)?
Has anyone performed these pieces? Any other favorite Schumann pieces for clarinet?

If it's a German edition, the B means B flat. For an obscure historical reason (to all but musicologists), B flat became known as B to the Germans, and therefore B natural became known by the letter H.

Never performed the pieces you mentioned, but the transcription of the 3 Romances are nice.

Does anybody here know the obscure historical reason? I don't, and I'm curious.

The 3 Romances for Oboe work beautifully on A clarinet. The inexpensive Schirmer edition comes with an A clarinet part.

The basic Schumann standard for clarinet is Opus 73,though frequently performed with Cello. The Three Romances is a work for Oboe, though(as mentioned) works very well on the Clarinet. The Fairy Tales, I believe, is Opus 132 is for Clarinet, Viola and Piano.

Lelia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Note explains why B means Bb in Germany and countries under its influence.
