 "La Marque\" clarinet
Author: Tim Wilson

Can anyone tell me anything about an older clarinet I found called a "La Marque". The emblem or logo says "Paris France" around the top, I think, with "La Marque" along the bottom. The emblem is reminicent of the Buffet Crampon emblem, yet somewhat different. I'd love to know who made the clarinet, and how to figure out whether or not it's a good quality horn. It's wood, and looks to be a nice clarinet. Thanks for any insights.

I started a post and AOHELL erased it. No responses, will try. Prob. made by Martin of Fr and It 40-70's, may be student line of Martin Freres [or M Busine {maker??}]. Mark C may be able to help, also search the Forum for Martin, believe we have discussed this before. Don

Pan American was Conn's lowest grade student clarinet. Intonation is very poor on it. Its construction is very inexpensive too. However you say that your daughter's is brown wood. Is it a reddish brown? Does it look like it has a "fancy grain?" If so it might be one of the instruments made from a laminated wood billet that Conn was experimenting with for a while. They play just as badly as the other Pan Americans but they are beautiful and rare as many came delaminated so these have some collectible value.

I forgot to say that the value of other Pan Americans is, however, extremely low.

I've seen the "La Marque" on the auction sites but don't know how good it is.
