 Anthony McGill/Weber Quintet
Author: Ken Shaw 2017
Date:   2008-01-26 19:33

Anthony McGill, co-principal at the Metropolitan Opera, has a live performance of the Weber Quintet finale on Performance Today. Go to http://performancetoday.publicradio.org/?month=1&day=25&year=2008 and click on Hour 1. He begins at around 11:30.

This is one terrific performance. His tonguing is as elegant as anyone I've heard, his technique is perfect, his tone is both sweet and strong, and the performance has a light touch that is just right, in a piece that's too often done "raging bull" style.

Thanks for the post! There's also Phili Orchestra playing Tchaikovsky 5th later in the program (around 24:00) for those wanting to here what I assume is Morales playing.

Several years ago I heard Anthony play principal on Mahler 6 with the Cincinnati SO. The entire section played some of the most beautiful sectional playing I have ever heard. I believe that the andante movement was the finest playing I have heard by any ensemble, live or recorded. I just wished he hadn't left Cincinnati. New York is just too far! He is quite an amazing player.

I had the pleasure of hearing McGill play the Mozart Quintet and the trio suite from L'histoire here in Washington with the Music from Marlboro group a couple of years ago. His playing was indeed marvelous!
