 Christmas Season Music CDs

So what's your favorite Christmas Music CD? I need to buy some new ones for our family's Christmas Eve party. I've got some of the Canadian Brass, lots of classical stuff. What do you like? Are there any good suggestions about clarinet music?

The Baltimore Consort. If you're not familiar with them they are an early music group with a somewhat flexible roster of players.

They have a disc of Christmas music that is fantastic. Beautiful interpretations of some well known and some not so well know carols. Absolutely top notch playing and singing.

I am a huge fan of the a cappella group InPulse. They have a wonderful christmas CD that was recently released. It has some originals as well as some of the traditional christmas songs. You can find it at www.inpmusic.com. I know that it isn't instrumental (but hey- their vocal percussionist is AMAZING) but they are definately worth it.

Am I the only person here for whom "favorite Christmas Music CD" has the same sort of ring to it as "favourite daycare surgical procedure" or "favourite customs and immigration hall"?

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Well David, I apologize for your pain. However, my family (especially my granddaughters) expect to hear it when they come over for dinner on Christmas Eve--followed by the sound of packages being opened. The middle granddaughter, Kate, has decided she wants to play clarinet and wants to hear clarinet music all the time (she's 3).

Good suggestions so far, gang. Thanks.

Hi,

The vintage Robert Shaw Chorale recordings (as well as later ensembles) have always been favorites for me. While a bit dated in some cases, the performances are still exceptional readings.

My fovorite Christmas CD is by the Paul Hillier Theater of Voices, "Carols from the Old and New World". I also have a Salvation Army Band Christmas CD I picked up from a bargain bin that is very good.

I'm with David, since I've worked in a CD store for 12 years.

However, I do like the Barenaked Ladies' holiday disc, and pretty much anything by Brave Combo...who have at least a couple of holiday things out.

If you can find it "A Caberet Christmas" features some great singers like KT Sullivan, Andrea Marcovicci and Karen Akers. It also has my favorite carol "I Dont Remember Christmas" (and I don't remember you)

" A Broadway Christmas" is good and a little different from the usual fair
Manhatten Transfer and Mureen McGovern also put out good ones

My all-time favorite (in fact, about the only Christmas CD I can listen to more than once) is BBC Music Volume II Number 4. It's Music for Christmas, an anthology from the 12th to the 20th century, by the Taverner Consort, Choir and Players. It came with BBC Music Magazine, and covers Praetorius to Schoenberg. Glorious!

I really like Vince Guaraldi/Charlie Brown Christmas. Maybe it's my vintage. Also there's a nice Mel Torme CD. I second Mannheim Steamroller, too.

A few years ago, I ordered a book entitled "Yuletide Soiree" from Amazon, it has recipes for party stuff, in which I was not interested, but there are two really good tapes. I imagine they'd have CDs now. Almost every famous Christmas record you can think of is included, from Little Drummer Boy to Little Saint Nick by the Beach Boys, and there's also an accompaniment only version, with lyrics, if you're up to singing along. Good for kids.
