 LeBlanc Rosewood Clarinets
Author: Bob Phillips

Does anyone know what lines of LeBlanc clarinets were/are made in Rosewood? I've just bought one on eBay from a vendor in England, and don't know what it is (its beautiful, and the corks look like they've never been greased).

(Don't know if its in C, A, Bb, either).

Thanks,
I'm dying to have my hands on it and to see how well it plays.

The Leblanc Symphonie VII was in rosewood. I believe it came in Bb and A models. I have an older Leblanc brochure in PDF I can send you that details their clarinet line from a few years ago.

>I've just bought one on eBay from a vendor in England,

Let me get this straight. I'm sat here in Italy buying all my french clarinets from ebay in the USA and you, in the USA, have just bought one from the UK?

Given the current exchange rate and the over inflated prices in the UK, I can only assume you must own half of California or be living on a yacht in international waters. ;-)

Now I'm jealous. Sounds interesting!

I've owned 2 Leblanc Symphonie VIIs and sold both of them after a short period of time. Beautiful instruments, to be sure, but a bit on the bright side for my taste. Yes, they were made in Bb and A. They were also quite pricey. I got mine at a huge discount from IMS (International Musical Suppliers) and paid $3,795.00 each for them.

You can do a search on the board for Leblanc Symphonie VII and you'll read more. They were discontinued.

Looking for Leblanc brochures, I found a fairly recent one, havimg the Concerto and Opus as their best, and all were made of "aged grenadilla wood" . When I find my older "wall display" poster, listing models back into the 1960's, I'll look for any rosewoods, quite few? You might make an archives search, a number of us discussed the {small] variety of woods etc suitable for clarinets, and some of their characteristics, such as the ?close? relationship of rose. to gren. and their densities re: tonalities. With "rose." being the more "exotic-sounding" NAME, some will claim their un-stained, ?colored? gren. as it. So cavaet emptor !!

Thanx, Mark, Don

My experience with the Leblanc Symphonie VII clarinets I purchased from Lisa at IMS were in the late 90s and early 2000. The keys and acoustics were identical to the Opus, with the extra eb/bb key.

I tried Symphony VII long time ago at music store. My first impression was its nice-looking of the material. And plays very well, too. I liked that imstrument as well as Opus. I saw the interview with Ricardo Morales about this Rosewood clarinet at on-line article of LeBlanc's website....long time ago. I want to see this again!!

caveat STUPID

I have a slow internet connection, so seldom look closely at the postage stamp sized pictures people place in eBay ads. I saw the new corks on the leBlanc and go all excited --thinking that it might be a Symphonie or an Opus. Couldn't find any other LeBlancs made of rosewood.

SO, I bid on it and won.

Yesterday, I exercised my new high speed connection to look more closely at "my" new LeBlanc. SIGH. Its an antique Albert system horn. Bummer, because I already have a nice Buffet Albert system antique that I show people who are interested in getting an idea of the advantages we have with our modern instruments over the pioneers who played all that hard stuff with fewer keys.

Thanks to all who have passed along more information on the rosewood horns.

I'm finding this forum to be a super way to get my head into my music in the morning.

Well Bob, you can put it back up on eBAy and sell it. No problem. Hopefully you didn't pay too much for it.

So, Bob... You saw it closely enough to notice that it had new corks, but not closely enough to notice the key system?? ;)

Out of curiosity, I did a search of recently ended eBay listings, but couldn't find this one. It sounds a lot like one of my horns. Would you mind posting pics when it arrives?
