 Dilemna and partial solution

I was presented with a task to make an Eflat clarinet play in tune by making a new barrel. The owner felt that it needed a 48mm barrel...which is like stretch limo size for an eefer...something seemed wrong, so I had the whole eefer sent to me.

When it arrived, it tested waaaaayyyyy sharp. In fact, it seemed to be in the Key of E-natural.
GBK realized that this was a HP (High Pitch, not Hewlett Packard) horn.

So if I fix the upper notes, the lowers also need a fix by extending the bell.
I can not extend the middle because...there is no middle.

Here is the solution that fixes it within reasonable playability without totally redoing the holes, keys and bore:
pic one is the barrel...I added the thicker ring to match the bell extension
pic two is the bell extension which has a hard rubber insert and preserves the original bell upper metal ring
pic three is the assembled instrument.

What an elegant solution!

And that li'l puppy has got a wrap-around octave key, too.

Beautiful work. Next, you need to cut it in half in the middle and add a bit there, or, better yet, cut it into slices between each key and pad, like a suasage and add pieces to make a zebra clarinet.

Seriously, how is the intonation now? I think it could require some serious carpentry in the holes to create a good scale at 440.

I wonder if the old mythical shoelace trick would have worked? You know, the trick of dropping a shoelace down the bore to effectively reduce the inner cross-sectional area, which has been suggested as a means to turn a Bb clarinet into an A clarinet (no, I've never tried it myself......)

Nice solution!
Sure looks like some BACKUN parts there?

I got a chuckle out of your oxymoron (as regards eefers): "reasonable playability"! Nonetheless, a nice effort.

Ken and John, sorry it took so long for me to answer...

The scale is "reasonable" but would require tone hole work to really fix for major ensemble play. ie presently 5-10 cents off on the middle notes. It was not within the scope of the "work order" to make it perfect, nor do I believe that perfection could be achieved.

The bore is small to begin with and oddly the chosen barrel work was slightly wider than the original 0.520.

JJM, The parts were all made by me...the barrel ring just reinforces the top of the socket because of the thiness of the structure, plus it was made to match the bell extension holder which was made to conceal the hard rubber insert. (I could have used Delrin, but I had an old hard rubber barrel spare part that lended itself nicely. The bore of the bell receiver has been narrowed a bit.
