 Bizet's Carmen
Author: Melanie
Date:   2000-01-05 01:01

Not to sound totally ignorant, but what are the clarinets required for the instrumentation of Carmen? Specifically, is there a bass clarinet part? I feel so stupid asking a sillly little question like this, but I will get over it. No one can seem to give me a straight answer on this!

Thanks!

Melanie

Gee...not in the marching music...

I've never played a piece without a bass clarinet part...then again, I couldn't play the song if it didn't. Anyway, I am positive. I've never played it, but I have a recording and I hear a bass clarinet (we all know I sit there and listen for low clarinets).

I'm sure someone out in our clarcyberland has played the opera, the closest I've come is to the orchestral version of the major songs/dances. With the "Fate Motive" so prominent in many of the pieces, I'd be surprised if Bizet did not add bass cl to the usual 2 cls [down in the chalameaux?] to support and give "spooky" feelings to the cellos and string bass. What a great opera!! Don

I looked in several books, Groves [which has a great discussion of the opera] and others, incidentally, Carmen means "song" they say! . In talking to knowledgable musical friends, they say that yes, a bass cl is needed to supplement the bassoon and low strings for the Fate! You need to ask conductors etc to be sure! TKS for asking, Don

I have a full score to CARMEN and I've never seen a part for bassclarinet.Furthermore, I've never HEARD a bassclarinet in CARMEN and in the many productions I've seen at the Met, I never saw a bassclarinet in the pit. The next time I see him, I'l as Jim Ognibene, bassclarinetist at the Met if he's aware of any use of the instrument. I seriously doubt it.

There is no bass clarinet part in either suite(orchestral) (I had to play Bb/A) so I would assume that there is no part in the opera.

I can blame mine on my CD. It says there's a bass clarinet, but that just means I have a different version than was being asked about. Sorry! Just trying to help!

Okay, well it looks like I'll just wait and see what version of the opera we play. We're presenting Carmen as the spring opera at college, and I'm the bass clarinet on call, so I play as needed. I just wanted to know if I might be needed. I'll let you all know what happens!
