 Zinner-Kaspar

A number of people make Kaspar style mouthpieces on a Zinner blank, including Greg Smith, Walter Grabner, Dave McLune, Michael Lomax. Can anyone who has tried these offer any feedback, especially for the last three makers, whose are somewhat newer? How do these play, how do they compare in sound and feel to original Kaspars, (etc.)?

I own two Kaspar mpcs, an "Ann Arbor" and a "Chicago" which I use as my main performance mpc. I also own a Smith Chedeville 1+ and a Smith "Cicero" Kaspar Zinner copy which I carry in my case in the event that something unthinkable happens to my Chicago. My Chicago is a #14 and has a slightly richer, darker sound than Gregs #11 "Cicero", but that slight difference in tambre may be only noticable by me and not the audience. Gregs Cheds and Kaspars have a very nice of their own and respond evenly in all registers. I had six of his "Cicero" modes to choose from, and because of Gregs "fine tuning" (quality control is more appropriate), the choice was rather difficult. They all played well enough to replace my original Chicago if need be. Just would have to use a different strength of reed and get used to the "feel" of the Zinner blank in my mouth.

Bottom line--Gregory Smith mouthpieces?? As a Kaspar player, I like them.

BTW--I am not on Gregs "payroll" in any way. I paid the full asking price for his mouthpieces and did so because I liked them and thought they were worth every penny.

It all sounds very involved. I just use a couple of Zinner's, one in each clarinet.
