I have to go on an international flight that will last about a day. (Half way around the world...) and I was wondering: Where in the world should I put my music stand? I have a foldable one, but should i stick it in my baggage that I'm checking in, or should I just forget about it? The metal detectors will go off... right?

the music stand will go through the scanner so the metal detectors will not go off. you can carry metal objects on the airplane you just can't walk through the metal detector with it on you.
i would just check it in the baggage. since i assume you will be needing to carry on the instrument(s).
make sure that you remove reed knives from your carry-on. they can be checked as well. they will confiscate them or allow you to send them along provided you get out of line and do that. then back into the line. i lost a swiss army knife that way this year.

they just x-rayed my clarinet from LAX to London last Summer. It was in a small case in my backpack (everything else was in checked baggage, even my reeds)

A friend of mine had to open his clarinet, assemble it and actually play it.
Perhaps security was just having a slow day...GBK (who only had to take off his shoes, but had some great orchestral excerpts ready if asked)

I had to take off my shoes both ways. They didn't seem to mind the clarinet, though. Perhaps because I was traveling with 70 other musicians.

My clarinet went through just fine as well - I take mine as carry-on. They recognized it from the x-ray, and were just fine with it. The metal stand should go underneath, though. Yes, the shoes are having to come off a lot these days and that's because a lot of them are made with metal supports inside them (my husband got to see his shoes on the x-ray, we never knew about this).

X-ray or Open it?
It all depends on the people at the "security" station.
As I was returning recently from overseas, I noticed the security people looking at my case going through the X-ray machine and smiling. I was asked to open the case and one of the inspectors asked if I could kindly play "Happy Birthday" as it was the birthday of one of the inspectors.

If the music stand is perceived as something that could be used as a weapon, they might confiscate it it you carry it on. (They confiscate a lot more than just knives.) To be safe, I'd check it as baggage.

On a domestic flight a couple of years ago, inspectors decided to open my case and dumped the instrument out on their table. Luckily, no damage. However, I will be quick to offer my own assistance in accessing the instrument in the future.
