Sol Yaged

Here's good news for a change.

There was a great article in the New York Times yesterday on Sol Yaged -- at 82, he's still playing the Conn he got in 1938, and still making a good living playing the standards. (He wrote the music for The Benny Goodman Story and taught Steve Allen to play the clarinet well enough to finger-synch the solos.)

Great piece...except is Unca Sol "built like a linebacker"? He's about 5 foot something. Maybe a 1938 linebacker. :-)

I would imagine Sol's good living is due in large part to being one of the world's great nickel-and-dimers. It never happened to me, although I only worked with him twice. FWIW...

He told me he only uses #1-1/2 reeds. His playing is easy and laid-back as only a complete monomaniac nut's can be.
