 Has this happened to you?

I just opened my eefer case for the first time in many months. Something ate the tips off my reeds. The deepest chewed out areas go about 1/16th inch into the reed. No damage to the pads, which are kit leather. No funny smell in the case and nothing moving. Bummer.

Obviously a critter with a good sense of humour?

Sounds like you may have an infestation of DONAX MITES!

(I just made that up)

I have purchased more than a few old used clarinets off of eBay. Many have used reeds left in the cases. Some of the reeds are ratty looking as you described. I had attributed that to the previous owners being careless and unwilling to invest in reeds, but maybe there is something that eats on them.
I've not had this happen to any of MY reeds. Many cases do smell funny (old instrument smell), but I too have not seen anything moving.

Hmmm... I wonder if it was an actual critter, with legs?

It sounds like digestion continued outside the confines of your boca...

Synonymous Botch - "Learn to hire people to do the things you don't like, as if you love them" - How about this: "I didn't get this far in life by only doing the things I thought I'd like to do", a quote from me. Say, maybe we could hire someone to play our scales for us! Now that would be nice.

Now about the reeds, I don't have a clue except that it could be a normal degeneration process that happens to trees, bones, etc. that are left in a humid condition. It would naturally start at the tip since it's the most vulnerable.

Jim, you already know the tune: "Dum de Dum, Dum de Dum, -----"

"Eefer Case, EeferCase, somethings trying to eat thee...
Eefer Case, Eefer Case, Reeds have been chewed on discretely...
Small and white, and gnawed by night, they are not happy to meet me.
Eefer Case, Eefer Case, bloom and grow forever."
