Hello all,
I've just been elected President of the Univ. of WI-Stevens Point Chapter of CMENC. One of my plans is for us to bring in more speakers (which hasn't been happening in the last couple of years). I have some ideas already, but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for music education speakers that are in the midwest and wouldn't be too expensive to bring in (in terms of all costs---we don't have much $$$) and how I could get in touch with them.
Thanks for any suggestions you can come up with!

Have you contacted the Wisconsin School Music Association as a resource for speakers? 1-608-249-4566 Dr. Mike George is the Executive Director and has been envolved with Wisconsin music education at all levels for many years.

This probably sounds dumb but I'm sure there are a number of superb, retired clarinet professors out there willing to come and give a talk for a reasonable fee. Reference the current ICA member list and see who you can dig up...whoops. v/r Ken

In terms of Music ed stuff, our CMENC never did anything like that which makes me sad because I find listening to that sort of stuff very valuable (reasons for going to the IMEA conference and Midwest band clinic as a student especially w/ as cheap ($15!!)as it is for a college student). Back to topic....
One thing that I found very helpful was when I was going out to do my classroom observation getting to talk to teachers-- I grew up in a rural area where the music program constantly hung by a thread so that is the experience I have-- but I have now observed Orff/Kodaly teachers in grade schools which I find facinating, talked with composers, professors at my own college and other colleges, etc. That would be a great source-- while they may not be deemed "experts" when you're sitting around thinking of who would be a good speaker, round tables and just getting to hear about different teaching experiences/methods that are used in their schools is a great way to learn and to gain experience for college students who up to this point may have only had one point of view on how a music department- band- choir is run. I know that I've learned a lot in that way.
A lot of professors around the Chicago area speak at different events. Dr. Richard Fischer from Concordia U. in River Forest, IL, has a good perspective on private college advanced music, Dr. Menghini from Vandercook College, Chicago, has a lot of good speaking experience in regards to how vandercook teaches for practical "gotta save the school music dept." education, etc. Many other schools hold their own teaching weekends in regards to specific kinds of teaching (Concordia has a weekend in the fall for Church Musicians and choir directors) which are usually very cheap for college students. Other professors from different colleges and teachers from local schools around your area may be a great source of different perspectives, keeping in mind that not everyone in your CMENC will stay in a particular area to teach meaning that widening to different groups would help with viewpoints.
I wish you lots of luck! I have been a member of my college's MENC and it has sorely disappointed me with not providing much more education than what I can get from the fee providing me with the journals (which I didn't even get this year because I was never told when sign ups occurred if they even did... I'm not sure it was even active this semester since I was taking most of my classes at a nearby community college to save some money.)

HI!
I'm also CMENC president for my chapter way down here in Macon, GA. We had one of our students come in a speak about the Praxis exam. She's in her student teaching now and it was really great to hear her talk about some of this stuff. Very helpful. I'm currently looking for some ideas for speakers, so help there would be much appreciated!

I was pres. of MENC at my school for couple years. One thing we did for speakers (which is quite cheap...or even free!) was to invite in recent music ed. graduates who are in their first year or two of teaching to talk about the challenges of being a new teacher. This has proven extremely helpful for everyone (especially those who are getting ready to go out for student teaching). In my experience, these teachers are very willing to come share their experiences with everyone.
