I recommend:
1. <b>long tones</b> (chromatic scale up and down, one tone per breath, pp-crescendo-ff-decrescendo-pp, watch to keep the intonation and not getting sharp at the end)
and
2. <b>finger studies</b> (I prefer the short finger studies of the Baermann method - I'm playing the german system)
and do not forget to increase the time per day you play carefully.
You should reach an acceptable level again within three or four weeks even if you stoped playing for a couple of years.

I hope this helps (and your friend doesn't have to solve some reed problems)
