Fellow Aussies
Don't forget tonight's Sydney Symphony Orchestra Master Series broadcast (Classic FM) - 8pm, Eastern Standard Time (Sydney time).
Mikko Franck conductor
Sabine Meyer clarinet
RAUTAVAARA Angels and Visitations
MOZART Clarinet Concerto K.622
SIBELIUS Lemminkäinen Suite
A wonderful program with wonderful conductor and soloist.
It would be naughty to record the Mozart, wouldn't it?

A group of us were invited to see Sabina at a master class she had in Toronto, Ontario. We were simply amazed at her ability to play anything from memory to illustrate to the student how to play the portion of music, the sound projection and smooth intonation, and to top it off, the gentle but informed way she dealt with the students. A real credit to her as a professional. If you can see her, go!

For all of us non-Aussies--is this concert web-accessible, or broadcast in some way beyond Australia?

I saw the Sydney Symphony concert last Wednesday 31/7. The Angels and Visitations was well played but a little odd. Sabine Meyer impeccable as usual even though she has resisted the temptation to play a boehm clarinet or a Buffet! It can be done. The Sibelius was long to say the very least and a fairly sloppy performance. The Swan of Tuonela is the only part of the work of any consequence or appeal. It takes a long time to get to it and it is a long wait after it has finished.

I listened to it on the radio and was blown away by how she made the basset clarinet sound like a regular A clarinet (apart from those low notes!) I've never heard anybody make the instrument sound so good. Admittedly I didn't like SOME of the things she did phrasing and ornamentation-wise, but she still managed to excite me, and not many performances of the Mozart manage to do that. To me the strings of the Sydney Symphony sounded unusually sloppy and harsh...?

Having now listened to the broadcast - Sabine's playing was thoroughly entrancing - the Mozart was my reason for listening. Her basset clarinet sounded delicious throughout its range. Her ornamentation didn't bother me in the slightest, it is a classical piece of music after all and ornamentation is to be expected.
I agree with Mark - the Sibelius was a little scrappy from the strings, which is unusual for them - maybe they'd been out on the harbour for lunch with Sabine and were a little distracted by beer? Who knows.

Unfortunately the ABC does not audio stream it's live broadcasts. There are copyright issues, royalties and many other frustrations to deal with. Yes - we do have the technology, E Michael Blake, and you might be surprised to learn we've also got running water and electricity in Australia, too.
