I am getting braces... I have my spacers... I hope it doesn't affect my clarinetting too much.
On a lighter note, I am eligible for the community band! I am hoping to try out and make it.

Ted, if it makes you feel any better, I had braces for 2 years and wasn't really a problem with my playing. Only after they were tightened once in a while (that hurt while playing a bit). Take good care of your teeth while you have the braces on; those teeth have to last a long time!

I remember a couple of girls in high school (way back 20+ years ago) who played flute and clarinet with braces. The only complaining I ever heard was when the braces were tightened - as Lynn says.
Good tootin' with the community band!

Hmm, it can only a matter of time before y'all start with the Brit "Bad Teeth" jokes...
Anyway, I wouldn't worry. Tom Cruise has been wearing his in public, so pretty soon it'll be a "must have" fashion accessory.

In my day wax was used to stop getting shredded by braces - but I'm sure today's braces are more sophisticated that NASA's spaceships.

Nope, two years ago I still had braces and used wax. Braces also dig into your lips, so make sure to take little breaks if you have to play for a long time.

Don't worry at all. I had braces and still got a lot better while I had them (4 years). I sat first in county too. One improtant thing is that your endurance will decrease for a while because of the evil little metal brackets. But, it'll work. Just don't push too hard at first.

I hate to rain on your parade, but carry this thought with you. In about fifty years you will get to wear poor fitting false teeth and write more threads about them. Have Faith!

I've had braces since 8th grade, and am going to be a senior in high school (yeah, I know that's a looong time! it's crazy! I'm nearing the end though!). Trust me, it's not a big deal. Occasionally you'll get stronger, tighter wires (like I got yesterday!) and you'll feel it for a couple days, but that doesn't mean you can't play. Actually it's more painfull for me to chew gum than to practice right now!
Welcome to the world of braces: yuck!

Ted-- Mindy's teacher gave her some stuff (not wax) to use on her braces when she had them. Ask her what it was -- she may even have some to give you. It was a REAL god-send to have that stuff. It was reusable and she loved it!! (kinda made her fell "special" because no one else had ever heard of it or seen it--)

Times like this where you thank yourself you're not a brass person who has to deal with cut lips by braces when he plays.
Me, I'm just glad I don't have braces.

...Or an oboe player. Playing oboe with braces seems like it'd be quite a challenge!
