I realize I am over my quota for posting this week already, but I wanted to get opinions on the Harrison Gold ligaure. I found my old one the other day. I had forgotten how nice a ligature it is. It seems to get a darker, rawer sound. Anybody else use the Harrison or know of others who do?

Yes, I have a Harrison Gold. My band director from the mid-80s gave it to me when I was in the midst of some heavy tryouts. It's pretty tarnished now, and I'd love to restore the shine to it. Are there any dos and don'ts for doing this?

I have both a silver and a gold colored model and, like you, prefer the sound of the gold--although I can offer no logical accoustical explanation for this. However, they are not my favorite ligs. The VanDoran Optimum with its parallel rail insert is currently working quite well for me as well as other local players. It mimics the original Bonade lig (which many pro's still use) without the constant re-adjustment hassels. My second choice for a clarinet ligature is the Mitchell Laurie "springboard" model. On all of my saxes I use the Winslow models, for which I have a lifetime supply of replacement parts compliments of the inventor, John.

I have a Harrison gold and love the way it sounds. I do not however like the gold color. Would prefer silver.
Also have a Vandoren Optimum and find it to be very good though I prefer my Oleg to it.
So I guess I like my Oleg...Harrison...Vandoren...in that order...

It has been posted here before that Rico is now making a Harrison style ligature. I have not seen them yet, so i will not go as far as to say that it is a copy.

I like my Joie Jolie...not to be confused with Angelina Jolie....
It is supposedly "made for" the Richard Hawkins mouthpiece. The Rovner eddie daniels model works nicely. And recently (because of a posting here) I have tried string. The string gives me a brighter sound. However, I can't do any quick changes with the string.

the ligature i use for Bflat, doesn't have a name, i don't know what it is (two srews, underneath)....
but for E flat i used/use string, and the only metal E flat ligature i've ever liked was.... a Harrison actually- one i borrowed from a friend... i'd like one. String works well on E flat when you want to blend, but i've got some "big loud" things coming up (Daphnis to start with) and i did enjoy the extra projection of the Harrison.....
(i've never tried one on B flat, so i couldn't comment on that)

I use a silver Harrison and love it. I don't think the color has any effect other than cosmetic. Just don't over tighten it as it can break. If it does though, don't toss it out. I had mine repaired by a lady who makes custom jewely for a hobby and its like new.

I've been using the Harrison (gold) on my Bass Clarinet since he sent me one about 20 years ago. They always!!! break at the "H" after a few years of hard use, that is 6-8 hrs a day.
The Clarinet Harrison I gave up on because of excessive breakage, although Harrison always replaced my broken ones with a new one.
But, when you're in a big solo, or recording, and it lets go, you're in big trouble.
They are great ligatures and they are being re-manufactured by Rico, I believe. Lets wait and see.
I'm experimenting with a new prototype ligature from Belgium, made by Francois Louis "FL", he's a mouthpiece maker and sent me some gold, silver, and brass Clarinet models to try.
Very interesting!
