Hey !
Does anyone know any good Nyssma 2 or 3 music ? I'm currently teaching a 5th grader.She started last year and is pretty good. She has some problems in the upper tones - Anything above an A is 'iffy'. She practices a lot and really gives it her all. Any suggestions ?!

Hi Laurie,
The Stuart Famous Clarinet Favorites and the Simon First Classics for Clarinet are both good collections - The NYSSMA lists which pieces are level 2. (some of the Stuart selections are level 1) Students must play 2 selestions. A level 3 is hard for a student who is still having trouble above A.

All of the Level 3 solos I have go up to a D. The only level 2 I found which did have Bs or Cs is Clarinata, by Maurice Whitney. It's a cute little piece, very repetitive with contrasting dynamics. It is mostly in the lower register, there's a middle section that's higher but goes only to an F. At the end, there are two Gs. I had fun with it; it was my first NYSSMA piece back in 4th grade. It's probably a little easy for your student but most of the harder solos go higher. My music has "LOUD" and "SOFT" written all over it. Looking at beginner music always makes me so nostalgic...

Well... In some aspects it IS a disease. Practice is the only medicine to kill it and often the diganois(score sheet) can be deadly !
