A YCL-65 is most probably a fine instrument.
Yamaha's been around for a _long_ time as a musical instrument maker; it's been in the US for a long time, too. Lest you think that Yamaha is a motorcycle manufacturer turned instrument maker - take a good look at the loge. Three tuning forks! They made musical instruments way before they made motorcycles (they started in 1889).
My first instrument was a Yamaha classical guitar (it actually said "Nippon Gakki" inside, which is Yamaha's original name. It mean "Japanese Music Company". I still have my Yamaha electric bass bought on the Ginza in 1974. Works perfectly still.
I have never seen any "junk" made by Yamaha, even in their student lines.
The chances are you have an ealy YCL-65, that's all. If it works well - keep it!
