 Hindemith's clarinetist: questionable
Author: Kristen D.
Date:   2002-04-06 20:53

I searched sneezy for past threads on the topic and have done
a little research on my own. In February, GBK mentioned in
a response that Hindemith dedicated his Clarinet Sonate to
Werner Reinhart. Yes, he was friends with Reinhart. I'm now
reading Fred Ormand's Masterclass on the piece from The
Clarinet journal (Vol. 22, n. 3, 1995, p. 4-7). He mentions
their friendship and that Stravinsky dedicated his trio version
of L'histoire du Soldat to Reinhart and Honeggar dedicated his
sonata to Reinhart as well. In the same breath, Ormand
writes, "One can not help but wonder if he (Honeggar) encouraged
Hindemith to write the sonata as part of his on-going series of
sonatas for the orchestral instruments."

Do we know for a fact that Hindemith dedicated his work to
Reinhart? If so, where can I find that fact in print?

Thank you,
Kristen Denny (GTA: UNL)

Kristin...You should be able to find the appropriate documentation that you need in either of 2 sources:

Skelton, Geoffrey. Paul Hindemith: The Man Behind The Music. Crescendo Publishing: New York, NY. 1975.

Skelton, Geoffrey (ed./trans.). Selected Letters of Paul Hindemith. Yale University Press: New Haven, CT, 1995

Any major music library should have (or be able to get on loan) copies of the above. Unfortunately, I do not know of the current availability...GBK

Kristen, a few days may elapse before GBK provides his source, as he is currently on vacation.

Obviously, I stand corrected.

Thanks for the reply GBK, but unfortunately both of those books are checked
out of the library here at UNL. If anyone else has access to these books, a
confirmation on Hindemith's clarinetist would be appreciated.

Thanks!
