The R-13 is a better instrument than the C13, but the C13 would be excellent for an intermediate student player. I've play-tested several of these side-by-side with the R-13 and the R-13 is a more substantial instrument--both in weight of the wood and density of the sound. The C13 is not to be shunned as a "second class" instrument in any way--it's an excellent choice and usually is well-built. But, as Fred just mentioned, the resale value is not as good as the R-13 for the reason you mention--most people have never heard of it.
