 Krommer Concerto for 2 Clarinets
Author: Victor

Does anyone have any performance experience with Krommer's Concerto for 2 Clarinets? On the clarinet parts, there are some fairly long written-out tutti parts. Should those be played? These notes are printed in the same font as the soli parts, making me think that they are meant to be played. They probably blend fine when in an orchestral setting. However, we will be playing this with piano accompaniment, so the tutti clarinet parts seem to standout too much. In a way, they are indistinguishable from the soli parts!

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Not that it matters, but which concerto are you talking about? He composed full concerti for 2 clarinets.

It's opus 35.

About Tutti:

Strictly speaking, no they do not have to be played.

But watch grand masters (such as Stoltzman) during the orchestra exposition of such concertos: wandering around in the orchestra, playing the tutti part just loud enough to add a bit of color, doing everything from memory of course, and entering his solo fully warmed-up and in full gear intellectually and musically.

Extensive tuttis are writen in solo parts to assist such approach to the music. To be used as often as appropriate and musically tasteful.
