I heard that playing the clarinet can eventually give you a bad overbite. Is that if it's held in your mouth improperly, or is it all just a really big myth?

aren't myths old stories about greek gods for example ?
I think your bigh myth is in this case plain nonsense.
Any jaw orthopaedics around here ?

Werner,
It is a myth. Dr. Ron Odrich, both a well-known jazz clarinetists <b>and</b> a well-known odontologist in NYC (along with being a teacher for years at Columbia School of Dental and Oral Surgery and author of ) has made mention of this in the journal of the International Clarinet Association, <i><b>"The Clarinet"</b></i>.

Thank you Mark.
Ron,
I wanted to agree with you in my message.
Just wanted to replace the word 'myth' by
the word 'nonsense'. Not sure how this came over.

Werner -
It came over fine I think it's a nonsensical myth created by other clarinetists who fear 'competition'. But, yes, I think 'nonsense' is a better word.
Of the many great clarinet performers, teachers, composers - I know of none who acquired physical problems from their involvment.

Wouldnt it be the opposite? See, naturally we have a smaller incriment of our top jaw coming slightly forward than our bottom, right? And ive heard that a lot of clarinet players have trouble when pushing their lower jaw out too far? I ve never had any trouble with this because i have a serious overbite and it has never botherd my clarineting

Yes Carmen, I think you are right:
If any effect at all then the opposite.
But I think we should be careful. We might
produce just another myth here.

Many years ago we single reed players used to say that all double reed players eventually went insane.
