I don't care for the Buffet Prestige C or the Leblanc C. Play on them and see if you can get the altissimo notes in tune with a standard mouthpiece and the normal fingerings.
Brad Wong at Western Michigan University has a Patricola C in ebony and says he likes it. This seems to be a good mix of moderate price, good construction and playing qualities.
I have a Stephen Fox C and like it. There will be a long wait, but the price should be quite reasonable for a custom-made instrument. Plan on going to Toronto twice, once to pick it up, and once for adjustments after a month of playing on it. Order his special throat b-flat mechanism and an adjustable thumb rest. You can also have him make it with a low D, left-hand D#/G# key, short barrel, gold keywork, or anything else you can dream up.
