I'm recently retired and have finally decided to pursue long cherished thoughts of learning to play an instrument. So I bought a couple of clarinets at e-Bay and have been tooting the horn for the past couple of months. My wife is going nuts, but....
An interesting fact has occurred to me: I've always preferred female's voices ( I love Montserrat Caballe) to man's voices, even though once in a while I don't mind listening to Pavarotti or Domingo.
When it comes to clarinetting, though, I prefer the chalumeau notes. They kind of soothe me.
Is this something only Freud could explain, or do others also have this sort of feeling?

Mozart also preferred the same register, so you are in good company.
Freud and Mozart - I don't want to touch that one...

I like the "guy range" as well, but remember, they don't give the sopranos the melody because they can't learn harmony parts, (though that's what I tell my wife when I want to cause trouble) the high voice or range for instruments carry much better.

Jose -
Whenever possible, for playing solo, I prefer 8va lower than written. People most often remark about my playing, that 'it sound so... smoooth' I haven't explored the alto yet but, like you, I love those lower (soothing) tones.
Have you tried alto clarinet?
