Hi All,
Just curious..(again)..LOL What is everyone's favorite holiday song either to play or hear ?
For me, I like to play Silent Night or O Holy Night. Deck the Halls by Mannhein Steamroller is the most liked one to listen too.

I like "Greensleeves" ;^)
(for those of you who don't know - it's exactly the same tune as "Whose Child Is This").

Mark--
"Whose Chid Is this?" Is that the tune Security sings over the intercom system in department stores during Christmas shopping season? Ditto: ;^

I have to go with the majority so far -- "What Child is This?," a.k.a. "Greensleeves."
Least favorite, although you didn't ask, is probably "The Twelve Days of Christmas" because it doesn't know when to properly take a bow and get off the stage.

Mine are "Bring the Torch Jeanette Isabella", "Holly and the Ivy" and "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day". Sorry, don't have just one.

Manhattan Transfer's version of "I wonder as I wander" and I found a CD "A Cabaret Christmas" which features "I Don't Remember Christmas (and I don't remember you!)

We're playing Russian Christmas Music by Alfred Reed. It's wonderful. Also, I second the vote for anything by Manheim Steamroller.

I like most every christams song. Some that weren't mentioned yet, Bing Crosby singing White Christmas and any song from the Nat King Cole Christmas album.

What about Sleigh Ride? Every year, I just TINGLE at the thought of students everywhere starting out a cute little tune in C, and all of a sudden finding themselves in keys like E, A and C# desperately seeking the correct sequence of pinkies to save the day...
Least favorite: Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella. Set's a bad safety example. Just remember:
"To see that manger never scorches, Wise Men do NOT bring in torches!"

There has been several "Sleigh Rides" written over the years. Other than the one by Leroy Anderson, there's the original by Leo Mozart (Wolfgang's father) that sounds good with wood winds only. Another that an exerp from one of the big Russian pieces (can't remmember the composer) but it was modified into a Christmas piece by a studio band back in the 40s. Its called "Russian Sleigh Ride". From the frozen Russian stepps, you can go down to the ice capped gaters of Brazil with "Brazilian Sleigh Ride" by Percy Faith.

Multiple sleigh rides, huh? I've only heard the Anderson and the Mozart. Sounds like a medley waiting to be written!

Oh...there are more "Sleigh Rides" than that. Don't forget:
"Norwegian Sleigh Ride" by Frederick Delius
"Sleigh Ride" (mvt #7 from Little Suite of 15 Pictures) by Jacques Ibert
and finally:
"German Dance for Orchestra in C Major K.605 / 3 ("Sleigh Ride) by Wolgang Mozart - written in 1791 (just a few months before the Clarinet Concerto)
I thought that might be interesting...GBK

My favorite, like beth, is "The Holly and the Ivy" When I was little I would lock myself in my room, put my cd player on repeat, and listen to it over and over until my parents started complaining. Then I put on headphones. I also like what child is this as a solo clarinet piece.

I absolutely love the piece "A Christmas Festival" by Leroy Anderson. It is an excellent arrangement of several different Christmas tunes, and it is also a real rush to play!

It's uncommon to hear my listening favorite: The Modern Jazz Quartet's "England's Carol," quite a knockout arrangement of "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen." Come to think of it, I don't have a copy of it, and I've not heard it in years. Really too bad. For playing, I'll go along with amy: Anderson's "A Christmas Festival" is quite nice -- or, for that matter, anything of his.
