 Festival Eb/Ab lever problem
Author: David Kinder
Date:   2001-09-27 04:20

I was playing with our ensemble this evening, and I noticed I couldn't go over the break easily. From the A key to the B on the staff was rather difficult. I finally traced the problem to the auxillary eb/ab lever. When I'd press the regular eb fingering, it would raise the aux key. No problem. However, when i'd RELEASE the regular Eb fingering, the aux key would keep the pad open just enough for a substantial leak, therefore my problem. I finally just took the extra lever OFF the instrument.

Has anyone else had this problem? What could I do for this? It is a new instrument as of 4 months ago.

Probably an easy fix. The Eb/Ab key may just be binding. A good repairman should be able to straighten it out in short order.

This is what warranties are for. Take it in - it's probably a simple adjustment. If your new car has a rattle, you'd bring it in, right?

Some players take the aux lever off since this happens not infrequently. This is a design problem with buffet, and common on other aux Eb horns.

The mechanics of these aux Ab/Eb levers is poor indeed. The Selmer Prologue example is an absolute disaster. Selmer Signature is one of the rare ones that is actually well designed, and can also be removed without trace if one so wishes.

Haven't had the problem, but recommend the "take it in" suggestion made by Mark and others.

My Leblanc LL has the aux. Eb/Ab key and I've never had a problem with it. I use this key quite a bit. My Selmer bass also has it and no problems here either.

Hi David
I have a pair of Festivals that I have played on every day for the last five years, until just recently when I bought a pair of Rossi's. Never once did I have a problem with this key on either clarinet which have slightly differing configurations (obviously from different batches) I would take it back to the place of sale, sounds like a problem they should be sorting after only four months!

Hey Andrew! Welcome to our forum! (Lots more traffic than the last site!)

I have taken it in and gotten it adjusted right there on the spot. I just hope it wasn't anything I did to create the problem in the first place.
