Im getting a Rovner ligature on Saturday because that is what has been suggested to me by my teacher. She used to play with one but changed to a Vandoren Optimum. She still suggests the Rovner because she said i would find it annoying with the different pads and thinks i will get on bvetter with the Rovner.
I was wondering about the difference in sound each one produces and what you guys prefer. I realise its mostly personal choice but just so i have an idea!

the rovners tend to produce a 'cloudy' sound trust me on this used to own one

Most professional clarinetists that I know, use a metal kind of ligiture, with the Bonade reverse being the most popular. The Optimum lig offer three inserts--a "pressure plate," a four-point, and a parallel rail--their copy of the Bonade. I use the Optimum parallel rail set up as does Larry Combs with the Chicago Symphony (at least when I last saw him give a live clinic). IMHO, the Rovner ligiture is a sound curtain which suppresses the rich upper harmonics of the basic clarinet sound resulting in a dark, stuffy sound that is harder to project in soloistic situations. My vote is for the Optimum lig with the parallel bars insert.

It somewhat depends on the mouthpiece. For me it was great on my Vandoren B45 mouthpiece but on my 5RV is seemed to deaden the reed response.

You may also want to check the Rovner Eddie Daniels model. It has replaceable metal plates which seem to greatly change the sound (similar concept to the Vandoren Optimum). I use the Eddie Daniels model as well as the traditional Rovner dependant on playing conditions or just the particular variations of a certain reed. BTW...at the recent Clarinetfest I did notice a number of "name" players that used the Eddie Daniels model as well as a good number that used the Vandoren Optimum.

I prefer the Optimum because it has never failed to give me excellent, vibrant sound with any mouthpiece I have ever used it with, and I don't personally know of anyone (yet) who has ever used an Optimum and did not like it.
I have them for my clarinets as well as for my saxophones and will probably never buy anything else!

The Optimum is my vote. It doesnt dampen the sound, so the unmuted reed stays nice and crisp with all the flexiblity and oevrtones you can ask for

I have not found in my experience that most pros use metal ligs , at the recent proms season I observed 50 to 60 percent of orchestral players using Rovners or similar,personally I have both a Rovner mark 3 and a Vandoren Masters that I interchange to get the sound I require or to get the best from certain reeds.

I use the BG Super Revelation, one prefered by several soloists--including Ricardo Morales of the Met. Opera. I've tested, tried, bought and sold almost every type of ligature on the market and have come back to the BG Super Revelation every time. Less slipping of the reed and clear, crisp articulation. More expensive than the Rovner, about like the Optimum. I didn't like the "metalic" sound of the Optimum--and tried all the various pads and configurations.
Also like the Eddie Daniels Rovner. Good compromise between a great metal and a great fabric ligature.

i like the vandoren optimum with the parallel plates .......i couldnt believe the difference in sound and it also appeared to me to make tonguing easier and crisper.............a lot of my friends tried mine and also noticed the difference and they all now use it too.........in fact one said that's like cheating!!!!!
