 Grad. School Advice
Author: Jen
Date:   2001-09-14 18:26

Hi.
I'm a undergrad preparing for graduate school auditions next semester in clarinet performance. I'm looking for advice from others who have been through this themselves. Any words of wisdom?
Thanks,
Jen

Get the application materials from the schools as early as possible. Different schools will have different audition repertoire required, and you want as much time to prepare as you can get. Try and get the applications in as soon as possible, too, because it will give you a better chance at getting the audition day/time you want. (Last year, I had to make two trips across the country instead of one because my audition days didn't work out.) If you have to travel, give yourself enough time before your audition to settle in and relax. Have a good reason for applying to the schools you choose--they might ask you questions along these lines when you audition. It's a good idea to narrow things down to maybe 3-5 schools that you would definitely like to go to. When you go to the school to audition, ask people who go there how they like it. Ask people who play your instrument how they feel about the teacher. Get a lesson with that teacher if you can. Prepare for the audition as thoroughly as possible! Be prepared for them to record your audition, be prepared for sight-reading, be prepared for all conceivable types of audition rooms! DON'T listen to other auditioners talk about how there are "only two spaces" or whatever--just focus on making music. These are things I picked up last winter.
