What I can' forget, what I keep thinking of, were those people on the hijacked planes, their last moments on this earth, terrified and knowing what was coming.

There aren't enough words to express what has happened today.

Ken is fine - I just got an email from him. His work is one mile north of the WTC.

There is a call out for Type O donors. I will be in line to donate my O positive in the morning.
The death of just one archduke triggered the first "Great War". The death of 2,100 Americans brought us into the second. I just heard that over 800 at the Pentagon are dead. I can't see how less than 2,000 could have perished in New York. I fear for what this day portends.
There are many heroes, the 200 firefighters and emergency workers ascending the Trade Center when it collapsed, the crew which apparently sacrificed the fourth plane to prevent it's reaching it's target (probably the Pentagon). I grieve for the families who are waiting to hear if their loved ones are still living.
Terry

To everyone in the US, you have the prayers and thoughts of everyone in Australia. We are devastated by these senseless acts against the community.

The people of Ireland are shocked and horrified by yesterdays events. Our hearts go out to our American friends.

Our country (and indeed the rest of the civilized world) is being tested. While justice will be done, we must be careful not to distrupt the normal functionings of society---for example abridging of our freedoms. The ultimate goal of all terrorists if to cause their victims to create a repressive society. If we overreact, they have won/

We can have justice without altering our freedoms.

I feel the country coming together in a manner that it has not done since December 7, 1941.

Actually those who compare 9-11-2001 to 12-7-41 misstate the case. They say there was no warning on 12-7-41. This flies in the face of the historical record. We failed to read the signs and react properly. (Not only that but Japan had intended to deliver a note that was tantamount to a declaration of war 30 minutes prior to the attack, but their Washington embassy could not get it typed in time.)In this case there was no credible warning and civilians were attacked. (There was only one civilian casualty at Pearl.) This act was totally unexpected and far more heinous that 12-7-41. Justice will be had and it will not be pleasant for those behind these acts.

God bless the United States of America

We USA musicians greatly appreciate your comments above. Living thru Pearl Harbor and more recently Okla. City, we had begun to believe that those were too much for our lifetime. Let us hope and pray that this is NOT the start of a WW 3.

I never went to the USA, I don't have any close friend there, but I couldn't believe it yesterday when I learnt it on a website, and was just there, amazed, thinking at everybody in USA I knew even a little bit.
When there is a terrorist attack in Israel, I have to check if my family there is all right, and yesterday I watched TV until it was very late, every channel in France made special news, to know what was happening.
Those who act like that, and we know who it is, and which countries are involved, just want the end of the democracy, and the world is just facing its mistakes. It is not fair. The USA was the only one country to react to the antisemistic and antiamerican speechs in Durban, and now it is the country which is attacked.
I am deeply shocked and pessimistic now, if this is possible, what else could happen now?
As I said, I don't know America, but I like this country, and I hope I'm mistaking about the future.
Jonathan

Needless to say, I've cancelled my plans to play in the orchestra in Israel. I would have left this coming Tuesday. It would be too difficult for my family (should we be allowed to travel to the Middle East), so it seems I'll be paying for a clarinetist to take my place (already done). Other US musicians are also cancelling for that reason. It is better to stay here at home and offer whatever help we can for our country at this time.

When we stop the daily business of our lives, and trade our comfort for the gaping horror we experience in front of the TV, the bastards win.

When we retreat from the pure joy life has to offer and hide in the shadows, the bastards win. When we see danger at every turn, the bastards win.

We must prepare for the inevitable restrictions that will follow.
We must accept that nothing will ever be quite the same.

I, for one, will attend public events and celebrate my freedom.
I grieve for the families of the ones who won't come home.

Sing for the silent.
Dance for the still.
Reach out to your neighbors.

"Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."
- Red Auerbach

I am in Ireland and a regular visitor to this excellent site.

I would like to echo Eoin McAuley's comments above concerning these appalling atrocities. My local Church is praying for comfort for the bereaved, strength for the emergency services and wisdom for your President and other leaders.

Friday 14 Sep has been declared a National Day of Mourning in Ireland.

John Power.

My sympathies, and prayers for all of the families, and workers who lost their lives in this tragedy. We all feel the loss in England. It is not the same here any more.

It's kind of hard for me to remember that there are more than just Americans on this site, and I was actually wondering if this would show up on the board.

I pray that this is not the start of WWIII for everyone's sake who knows someone in the military. (I can't be drafted, medical conditions, but still, I'm nervous for half of my friends that are enlisted in the military.) All in all I'm not concerned, but sad... angry, in fact, that people can be this cruel to others.

I do agree with anji in one thing: If you retreat from joy, the bastards win, but now that I've retreated, I'm running back and rededicating my life to my country and my music, both which are equally important. I suggest that not only should we pray, but we should try to fix our own private grievances and return to semi-everryday life. Therefore, I'm still gonna practice my clarinet just as much more. (Probably even more, now, that I have this on my mind...)

i was in my band class when i first heard of it. As i live in fairfax county, there were several people whose parents were in the pentagon. as far as we know, one parent has been injured, one is missing...i suggest that all of you go out and buy the new U2 Cd, it is extremely good, and scarily enough it has two songs, peace on earth and New York, that might apply to this tragedy. their are two verses in paricular that come to mind...
they say that what you mock
will surely overtake you
and you become a monster
so the monster will not break you

it's already gone too far
who said that if you go in hard
you won't get hurt

please, please only retaliate against the terrorists who did this, not just the middle east in general. I know several arabs at my school, it would be horrible if after this tragedy they had to go through another one...and i am sure that there are muslims in the middle east who are horrified as well. they are innocent, and i hope that Bush does a manhunt, not a war...i would not add to the toll of 30,000 people already killed.
