Can anyone recommend a good microphone for recording live clarinet performance? I have a good tape recorder, but not a good mike. Thanks.

Good - you're realistic ;^)
Ben Maas, a recoding engineer who is also a clarinetist, recommends highly a Coles 4038 for clarinet. 1150 new, perhaps you can fined one used.
If you want close micing of a clarinet alone, the AMT dual set is highly recommended (mount attaches to the clarinet. - not transducers).
Ben also recommends pairs of Marshall 2001, 2003, V67, 600, Shure SM 81, Audio Technica 4031 as reasonbly priced mics.

I plan to record a clarinet with piano accompaniment, not clarinet alone.
What do you mean by "pairs of " ?

Ben mentions using a pair for regular "stereo" recording (not near field). Search the Klarinet archives using "maas microphone" for many of Ben's comments on recording clarinet. He records for a living and has been nice enough to share a lot of info on the Klarinet list.
I use a Sony ECM-MS957 stereo mic which is servicable and is just over $200, but it is far from any sort of studio mic.
