Clarinetfest 2001 was terrific! But, why did so many payers get up and leave during the jazz concerts? I saw many get up and leave before Pete Fountain played and many left when Eddie Daniels played. I didn't understand why so many players got up and left. Jazz is music also.
Thanks,
Miles

Miles, there are a lot of people out there who still consider jazz to be undignified, unschooled, unstructured, (unmusical?), etc., and this is due mostly to ignorance. If they would take a little time to learn what is involved in playing jazz, maybe they would be able to appreciate it, and stick around for the jazz performances. And yes, Pete and Eddie are two of the best!

Miles,
many jazz players don't go to classical performances for the same reasons Dan points out below. It goes both ways.

Unfortunately ...

And Pete's playing up a storm. So was Al Gallodoro - who's 88 and can play rings around an awful lot of contemporary jazz folk still.

Until I reached high school I would only listen and play jazz. I thought classical was boring and came up with the misconception that classical music did not allow the expression that jazz music did. I thought classical was all the same. I found out how wrong I was just before entering high school. I love both classical and jazz music very passionatly and cannot think of any life without them.
