Help: Need double case for Bb and A clarinet
Author: Renate Wiseman
Date: 2001-08-19 01:28

Hallo!
My daughter has a Buffet R13 Bb and A clarinet and we bought a double
case for them.
Once it came in we found out, that we don't have a reg A but a full
boehm A clarinet that did not fit the standard case.
Right now we have it in a selmer case.
So does anybody know who would make a case for full boehm extended A and
reg. Bb clarinet?
PLMK if you know where I can find a case to fit both.
Thanks
Renate

That's going to be extremely tough to find without having one made to order. Have you considered that as an option? Downside: It won't be cheap.

I made mine from a $18 foam lined aluminum case I bought from Harbor freight. I cut the foam to fit the two clarinets and then covered it with velour material. Works better than a professional case. It has the advantage that it doesn't look like a case which would hold $4000 worth of instruments! Also you don't care if it gets banged or scratched up.

The problem I now have is I just switched to a one piece full Boehm which cannot fit into my home-made case, so now I do what I suggest you do... I went out and got a nice carry-on bag at Wall Mart ($30). It holds the two small clarinet cases, a double stand, music folder, all my junk (swabs, reeds, tuners, extra mouthpieces, screw drivers, pencils, etc.) and still has room for the Bb and the C soprano saxes!. Again, it doesn't look like I am carrying around expensive instruments, but rather dirty gym clothes. I really like this solution as it is much more practical than the double case, it really lets me grab whatever the gig requires and carry it all with one hand. My bag even has wheels, which I haven't needed yet.

That solution is nice as she can carry schoolbooks, CD player, lunch, whatever! It might have a little deficit in the "cool" department however!

Wiseman cases have removable "sections" of lining material to allow for longer clarinets. IMHO, these are probably the Caddilac of clarinet cases. Hand made custom, your choices of colors, etc....

The downside of Wiseman is their price. Expect to pay about 500.00 for a double case. Upside, besides that above, they'll last a lifetime!

Good Luck!

For my one piece rossi, I use (mainly) a reunion blues soprano sax gig bag (i made a piece of foam to put between my Bb and my A), although it affords little protection, it is great from running from rehearsal to rehearsal.
