I just bought my first wood clarinet!!

So I've been digging around for a wood clarinet for a month now (something I can afford anyway).

I've a friend and the local music store. I'm always hounding him for what's new in the used stuff.

Today I lucked out. He said "yeah, we just brought in a wood clarinet. I haven't even really looked at it"

So he pulls this thing out and it says Buffet on it. He admited he didn't know much about them (he's a bass player) so he just looked at how much the other guy who works there bought it for. He got out the calulator, fussed with numbers then said he'd sell it to me for $300,.. but that's MY price.

I put it together and played it for awhile. Pretty nice. It's in great shape, new cork, might need new pads soon... But I bought it.

I got home and started digging around. From what I can tell it's a 1973 R-13.

Something tells me I got a pretty good deal.

AWESOME! I posted on another post how I bought my 1982 R-13 for $399. I'm glad you lucked out in your search. Take good care of it, and you can sell it for 3 times for what you bought it for.

Yeah, I'm pretty pleased. It plays really nice. I'm going to have great fun with this.

I'm not sure what mouthpiece it has, but it plays pretty good. It has a funny picture/logo (looks like an owl with a horn in it's mouth) under that it says "NEMC", under that it says "france", under that it says "steelite ebonite". Then around the back side it says "G8". Any ideas?

I'm taking up to the repair shop tomorrow and having him give it a look and tune up anything that needs to be tuned up.

Oh.. I just figured out what "NEMC" stand for. Looks like it's a rental type mouthpiece. I like it better then the one on my vito though :)

The Woodwind Co. Steel Ebonite MPs are pretty good! I use a G8 myself.

Do a search on the BB for more info on Steel Ebonite mouthpieces.

It looks like you've got yourself an amzing deal!

Nice horn and a very nice moutpiece. Hold on to it for a while and don't think you have a pro-qulity setup now...

... nothing wrong with a NEMC mouthpiece. (National Educational Music Company) which rented and sold many Buffet (and other) clarinets & instruments. I thionk they used to be based out of New Jersey. yes, G8 is a Woodwind model number. You may have gotten even luckier with the Steel EB designation, too. mw

So it sounds like a pretty much lucked out all over the place.

I took it to the repair guy today. He said about $25 to get it all fixed up and cleaned.
Can't beat that. It's got some dirt buildup under all the workings and he thought one or two pads should be replaced. Short of that he said "it's in very good condition".

*does happy dance*

I have a 1973 R13 that I got for a great price too. It wasn't as great a price as yours but most definately worth it! Hooray for people who have no idea what they have!! j/k
Have fun, new instruments are great!
